Six years ago, my goal was to lose 65 pounds.  I kept trying to start and would fall off.  Then, I would start again, and fall off again because fear would hold me back.  It literally paralyzed me.

Fear, Broken Down

Fear when broken down, actually stands for: “false expectations appearing real.”

The very first time that I went to the gym, I was literally terrified.  I remember talking myself into it, putting my hoodie up, and driving to the gym.  But, once I got there, I walked in, literally scared crap-less, and immediately thought: “I can’t do this.” So, I turned around, I walked straight back out and sat in my car.  I was so afraid that I was hyperventilating at the steering wheel, and I don’t even know what I was afraid of.

Can you believe now the gym is my favorite place to be?

It was the false expectations in my mind that appeared real to me, and appeared scary to me. The expectations were saying: “what will people think of you. You don’t know what you’re doing. How are they going to look at you? What are people going to say when they see you in the gym? You don’t belong there.”  

All of these thoughts, expectations and images that were flooding my mind, weren’t real.  It wasn’t stuff that had happened to me before.  It wasn’t things that had been said to me before, but my mind believed it to be true.  My mind was literally running away from my goal.

How To Conquer Fear?

When you allow fear, and those false expectations, to appear real, it will paralyze you in your tracks.  So, I want you to stop and think for a moment right now and ask yourself: “what are you fearful of? What are you fearful of in your weight loss journey that isn’t necessarily true? Are you scared of making the wrong decisions? Are you scared of starting something and failing again? What is that false expectation that seems real to you, but it’s not actually the truth?

You have to be really careful during your weight loss journey, because your fear will paralyze you.  You’ll never get healthy, you’ll never be able to lose the weight you want to lose, you’ll never find happiness, and you’ll never gain confidence if you’re allowing fear to creep in and try to tell you these false truths.  

Step OUT of your comfort zone, and allow the fear to work for you instead of against you.  What’s the worst that can happen, right?  When you feel that fear rising, just tell yourself: “oh, that’s just a false expectation in my mind that appears real to me, and I’m going to do it anyway”.

When you learn to step through fear, you’re going to accomplish so much in life.  You’re going to be able to lose weight so much faster because you won’t have these giant roadblocks.  You’ll realize: “oh, that’s not real. That’s literally a figment of my imagination.  I am making up a scenario about what will happen when I walk in the gym that is not true.
