Every time I see one of these food pyramids going around, it just literally makes me crazy.  I don’t agree with it at all.  If I was going to rebuild the food pyramid for you and tell you what the building blocks of your meals should be, as well as what your day should look like, here’s how it would go…

The Bottom

Green veggies.  This is going to help with digestion. The fiber will help you feel full and it’s going to give you all the nutrients that your body needs.   So, green veggies.  60% to 70% of your plate should be green vegetables.

The Second Row

Moving up from there should be lean proteins.  Proteins are the building blocks of your body.  It’s how your body repairs itself.

The Third Row

Then, moving up from there, is complex carbs.  Complex carbs are different from simple carbs. Simple carbs are breads, pasta, candies and stuff like that.  Those were on the old food pyramid, but they shouldn’t be, because they spike your insulin and do a bunch of crazy things in your body.  

Complex carbs are the way to go, because they don’t spike your insulin and your body actually uses them as fuel.  This includes sweet potatoes, quinoa, brown rice, beans, and many more.   

The Top

Then, the next spot on the food pyramid would be your healthy fats, such as avocados, nuts, nut butters like almond butter, healthy oils like coconut oil, olive oils, etc.

That is what I believe your food pyramid should look like.  Build each of your meals with these portions:  the biggest portion of your plate should be your green veggies, then the second biggest portion should be a lean protein, then your third portion should be your complex carbs, and then your least most, but still really, really important is your healthy fats.  

Build each meal with those components and you won’t have to worry about your diet and your meal planning.  If you have each of those components, you will lose weight, and you will be healthy from the inside out.   These are the foods that are actually important for your body to use as fuel, and to operate efficiently.  With these types of food, your body can let go of its excess fat.  You will feel good, look good and have great energy.
