I know, habits are the hardest to change, and they can take so long to push away. But, if we want to achieve goals, we can’t ignore them.
You Can’t Change Your Habits
Everyone says that you need to change your habits, but honestly, this statement is BS. Habits cannot just simply be changed. They have to be replaced.
You can’t just let go of an old habit and be like: “Bye, see ‘ya. Hasta la vista, never going to see you again.” That’s not the way habits work. Habits have to be replaced. That’s why you see people trying to quit smoking with a toothpick in their mouth. The toothpick is replacing the cigarette.
Habits Are Way More Simple To Tweak Than You Expect
All you need to do is fragment your habits to find which part is damaging.
Let’s use the example of eating while watching TV, because that used to be me. I used to sit in front of the TV and eat a whole five pound tub of cookie dough. I wanted to replace that habit, because it was an obvious barrier to reach my goal of losing 65 lbs. I said: “Man, how can I change this? How can I actually replace this habit?“
If we fragment that habit, we have:
- Sitting on the couch
- Watching TV
- Eating Cookie Dough.
I determined the parts that were hindering my weight loss goal: sitting on the couch and eating cookie dough. As far as weight loss was concerned, watching TV was not a barrier.
What I told myself is: “Now I’m not allowed to watch TV unless it’s strapped to a treadmill.” I could still watch my favorite TV shows. I still got to watch The Walking Dead, and I still got to watch The Office, but it had to be connected to a piece of cardio equipment. I didn’t change my habit, I just replaced “eating cookie dough and sitting on the couch” with working out. I could still watch TV! I would either park a cheap piece of cardio equipment in my living room, or I would go to the gym, get on the treadmill, and watch my favorite shows from there.
That’s how I got through the first 30 to 60 days of my weight loss transformation. I swear, all I did was go to the gym, and watch my favorite shows while walking/running on a treadmill.
I want you to think about your habits that you have right now, and how you can replace the damaging part of it with something healthier? If you’re going to have the most epic 2018 ever, you have to replace some of those damaging habits with new healthy habits that are actually going to get you to that goal.
List out some of your damaging habits right now and get creative on how you can replace them. This will trick your mind into thinking you still have the same habits. It’s simply in a different setting, through a different experience.
Tune in tomorrow for the next step on how to have the best year ever.
